Eight days ago, we celebrated the first Sunday of Advent, a time of reflection and anticipation of the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. My wife and I recently watched a movie, The Christmas Train, in which one of the characters offers a quote of his wife’s. “Hope begins when you’re standing in the dark looking into the light”. I thought that was apropos for this season of hope in which we look forward to the coming of Light of the world.
As Catholic men, as Knights of the Eucharist, let us be witnesses of that hopeful waiting. As Advent is also the beginning of the new liturgical year, let us consider making a new year’s resolution which will deepen our faith, draw us closer to Our Lord, help us be better leaders of our families, the domestic church. I can say that for me personally, it is a challenge. Resolving to work out, eat less sugar or whatever the often used New Year’s resolution is, is somehow easier to start than something like spend an extra five minutes in prayer, go to confession more frequently or some other spiritual exercise.
Never-the-less, I try. And fail. And try again. Perhaps something simple such as making the Sign of the Cross at first waking. Or saying the Guardian Angel prayer. Or making a Morning Offering.
Happy New Year Brothers.
