Brother Knights of the Eucharist. When Past Supreme Knight Carl Anderson was formally installed in 2001, he consecrated the Knights of Columbus to Our Lady of Guadalupe. While on pilgrimage to the Basilica in Mexico City this past Februaly 3, Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly renewed that consecration.
Supreme Archbishop William Lori said in the Mass just prior to the reconsecration, “Our Lady leads us with a mother’s love to the heart of our Order and its principles of charity, unity and fraternity. She reveals us to ourselves.”
Our Lady does more than reveal us to ourselves. In all of her apparitions, it is never about herself. It is always about Our Lord. She leads us to him. She reveals him to us, most especially in the Eucharistic. When she appeared to Juan Diego in 1531, it was as a native princess bearing a child. This appearance brought hope to the native peoples who were living in confusion and despair.
The Spanish had put an end to human sacrifice, sacrifice which ordered their lives. Thousands of people, often children were sacrificed, which involved removing the beating heart from the victim. Our Lady presented her son, the infinite sacrifice. She revealed Jesus in the tabernacle of her body.
When we receive the Eucharist, we too become a tabernacle. Then we also become signs of the hope and the love of God to others who are living in confusion and despair. This is how we become Knights of the Eucharist. Let our Lady of Guadalupe lead us to her son.
To paraphrase one speaker in the short film on Our lady of Guadalupe, “Mother lead me to your son. Let me borrow your heart so that I can receive him like it is my first time. Take my heart Mother, and give it to Jesus.”
