And raising his eyes toward his disciples he said:

‘Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.

Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied.

Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh.

Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man.

Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way.’

Lk 6:20-23

This week we read Jesus telling his disciples that if we get everything we thrive for in this world: riches, to be filled with food, to laugh and be happy, to be spoken well by others, we are going to suffer in heaven. This is in contrast to today’s materialistic culture. I know that I have been wanting for the riches or always having laughter on my lips. And I don’t go hungry. I don’t want to be hated, even if it’s for the Lord. But Jesus is calling me to share in the suffering of others. To help our brothers and sisters in need with the blessings of what riches of money or talents I have. He wants us all to give up our worldly behaviors to support our needs, brothers and sisters. He tells us that he will provide. What are you doing for the poor, the hungry, the weeping, or the people hated because they have followed Christ? Jesus is calling us. Are we going to answer his call?
