The Sermon on the Mount by Carl Bloch (1877)
Lk 6:27-38

Jesus continues his Sermon on the Plain, teaching another principle that I know I, for one, struggle with from time to time. This week he teaches of what is often referred to as the Golden Rule. ‘Do to others as you would have them do to you,” Lk 6:31. How many times have you been cut off on the freeway and blew our horn or cursed them, maybe even gave them the finger in anger. Jesus calls us to be better than this. He says to “love your enemies,” Lk 6:27. Even to the point of physical violence and theft. We should forgive and love them. Who here can honestly say that they would love the one that strikes them or steals from them, but as Catholics, that is what we are called to do. Remember that God wants us to show each other love and mercy. We pray for that whenever we recite the Lord’s Prayer, “forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those that trespass against us.”

So next time that guy cuts you off on the freeway or the next time a coworker at work insults you, have pity on them and love them, for, through that act of love, we show God’s mercy and love for us all.
